Resources
Books that might interest you, as they have me:
- The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression by Andrew Solomon. A wonderfully written, very personal account of the author's depression and an exploration of depression in our culture, and other cultures.
- The Beast in the Nursery by Adam Phillips. This is an amazing contemplation of desire and "interest" and what makes us who we are. Any of his other books are also wonderful.
- Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology by David Abrams. A great writer explores our relationship with our animal nature and the environment that sustains us.
- The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs. An illuminating exploration of the experience of growing up and being gay in our culture.
- The Brain that Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. A wonderful selection of stories about brain injury or deficit that helped us realize that our brains can adapt to anything and then adapt again.
- Can Love Last? by Stephen Mitchell. Down-to-earth exploration of how relationships work or don't.
- A World of Fragile Things by Mari Ruti. Very insightful and warm, this book brings psychoanalysis and philosophy alive. Her other books are great as well.
- Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson. This is a must-read for all couples.
- Becoming Attached by Robert Karen. Vivid and readable, this book can make you realize how important attachment is in all our relationships.
- For the Time Being by Annie Dillard. An amazingly written musing on life and death and what to do with it all. I can't recommend this book more highly.
- New and Selected Poems by Mary Oliver (2 volumes). Simply great poetry.
- The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music by Victor Wooten. Thoughtful and inspiring journey to art, creativity and life.
- Radical Ecopsychology, 2nd Edition by Andy Fisher. An amazing exploration of environmentalism and a model for action.
- Oblivion by David Foster Wallace. Great stories, some of which (especially "Good Old Neon") bring psychotherapy alive on the page.
Other Toronto resources:
- CAMH - they have many programs for addictions and more serious mental illness.
